What are the options?

Obviously there are a number of things to consider when deciding on what type of roof to install on your home, from cost and durability to style and performance. The right roof is the one that balances all of these factors.

Basic Roof Structure

Most homes are built with gable-style roofs, consisting of two planes that meet at a central peak. The triangular sections on the ends are the gables. A hip roof is similar to a gable roof except that all four sides are sloped down to the walls. A flat roof generally overhangs the outside walls of the house. Most homes are designed with a combination of the different roof styles.

All roofs have four basic components

Rafter or trusses: provide the frame for the roof structure. Sheathing: usually constructed of boards or sheet material (ex: plywood) provide the first layer of protection. Underlayment: a sheet or roll material that provides a second layer of protection and also may act as a vapor barrier. Roof covering: shingles, tiles, or sheets, which provide a third layer of protection.

Roof Flashings

The key to waterproofing your home’s roof is flashing. Flashing, if installed correctly, directs streams of water away from these points of entry:

Flashings
  1. Skylights
  2. Chimneys
  3. Vents
  4. Valleys
  5. Eaves
  6. Rakes

Joints are vulnerable because the two sides may expand and contract at different rates due to a difference in material content or pull apart as a house settles.

This is where selecting a qualified and professional contractor becomes most important. Each shingle or roof panel is manufactured using predetermined specifications. The integrity of your roof many times is determined by how well the joints are sealed or flashed. Don’t be fooled by looks a leaky roof may look great to the casual observer, but the performance of your roof depends heavily on the quality of installation. See “HOW TO MAKE A SUCCESSFUL CONSTRUCTION INVESTMENT” to learn more about selecting the right contractor for your home improvement.

Metal Roofing

Metal Roofing (Standing Seam or Metal Shingles)

Metal roofing has become the roof system of choice in the northeast due to its durability and performance during the harsh New England winters. Metal roof systems shed snow, which normally would be retained on the roof by an asphalt or wood shingle roof system. Advancements in metal roofing have provided homeowners with prepainted finishes that add to the aesthetics of a metal roof.

Metal roofs provide homeowners with many benefits normally found only in commercial roof systems. Metal is synonymous with strength and toughness. But as a roofing material, strength is only one of the advantages of metal roofing. Metal roofing is surprisingly affordable with life-cycle costs that are substantially lower than conventional roofing materials.

Extreme durability Metal roofs will not rot, crack, break, split, or burn Special coatings resist dirt and signs of aging Wide variety of colors Metal roofs can be made from recycled material, and are 100% recyclable Lightweight – metal roofs are less than 1/3 the weight of comparable asphalt roofs Many Different Profile Options Low Maintenance Costs Many Distinctive Styles Low energy costs – metal roof reflect mid-day heat back away from the home Fire resistance – metal roofs are non-combustible Speed of installation

A correctly installed metal roof will outperform conventional roofs in weathertightness under extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, fire, rain, hail, snow, and wind.

Standing Seam

Standing seam roofing is a metal panel roof system in which the panels are seamed together to make a vertical, or standing seam. The roof panels can be fabricated using various types of metals including galvanized metal, copper, and Galvalume Sheet. Panels can be formed on site using mobile pan forming machines and can be seamed using mechanical seamers or using hand tools. Jancewicz & Son forms all standing seam panels on site using one of our six panforming machines. We also use mechanical seamers to seam our panels, which help to retain the integrity of the metal roof system.

What is Galvalume Sheet?

Galvalume Sheet is a cold-rolled sheet steel to which a coating of aluminum-zinc alloy has been applied. Scientists at Bethlehem Steel discovered the precise combination of aluminum, zinc and silicon for the coating nearly 35 years ago. This coating resulted in a highly corrosion-resistant sheet steel that delivers the optimum combination of aluminum and zinc characteristics: the barrier protection and long-term durability of aluminum and the sacrificial or galvanic protection of sheared edges that are characteristic of zinc. Jancewicz & Son uses prepainted Galvalume sheet supplied by Englert, Inc. Englert is one of the few single-source metal roof manufacturers with an in-house coil coating line. Our metal roof installers are certified by Englert, Inc., one of only a handful of certified installers in New England.

In addition to the durability gained by this coating, prepainted Galvalume sheet comes in a wide range of colors and finishes. Prepainted Galvalume sheet won’t spall (chip), curl, or split like asphalt or wood shingles. A roof fabricated from prepainted Galvalume sheet can also withstand hurricane force winds, giving it the industry’s highest wind rating of UL90. Our prepainted Galvalume sheet standing seam roof systems come with a limited 35-year finish warranty.

One of the most attractive features of a metal roof is its ability to shed snow, ice and airborne debris better than competitive roof systems, resulting in a virtually maintenance free roof.

So if you are looking for structural integrity, durability, resistance to damage from wind, rain, snow, ice, salt spray and even fire, combined with a clean, crisp look in virtually any color imaginable, than you want a metal roof system fabricated from prepainted Galvalume sheet.

Metal Shingles

Never re-roof your home again! Metal shingles are engineered using a combination of carbon steel, aluminum, zinc, and multi-layered coatings, which help resist dirt and environmental aging. Metal shingles by Englert, Inc. are backed by a non-prorated lifetime warranty that is transferable to the next homeowner should you sell your home.

Metal shingles won’t rot, crack, split, or break, and their unique four-way locking system holds tighter as the wind gets stronger. Metal shingles are available in wood or slate profiles and come in an array of colors.

Slate Roofing

Seen on many of the older homes and barns in the northeast, slate was the roof system of choice as it is considered virtually indestructible. Slate comes in many different colors and grades depending on its origin. Most slate used in New England is quarried in Vermont, New York, or Quebec.

While virtually indestructible, slate roofs are more expensive than other roofing materials and their installation requires skill and experience. Jancewicz & Son has experienced roofers, skilled in the installation and repair of slate roofing. If you need your slate roof repaired – or would like to participate in our annual inspection program – please contact us.

What are the advantages of slate in comparison to other roofing products?

Long life and durability. Resistance to acid and pollutants. A fireproof building material. An impermeable barrier to water. A highly slip resistant material. The outstanding insulation from heat and cold. Highest storm resistance of any roofing material. Resistance to chipping, cracking and abrasion. A long life and fireproof roofing material. High strength material. The warmth and elegance of a natural stone. Slate is a natural stone and therefore environmentally-friendly. Many colors including greens, grays, reds, multicolor, etc. Virtually limitless architectural options.

Why can’t a regular roofer repair my slate roof? Why do I need a specialist?

Regular roofers are trained to repair roofs that are covered with asphalt shingles, built-up asphalt, and maybe EPDM. Slate is a very different material to work with, and therefore, to repair. A person who is trained to install and repair slate roofs is really just as much a stone mason as he (or she) is a roofer. The training is very different and the repair work is much more difficult and specialized.

Slate cannot be cut to size and simply nailed down like asphalt shingles. Slate needs to be cut with a specialized slate cutter, which leaves the correct flaky tapered edge. Nails cannot simply be driven through a slate tile – this would cause the tile to split and break. Nail holes need to be punched with a specialized tool which leaves an indent for the nail head to lay flush with the surface of the slate – otherwise water would leak through. The nails are then driven through with a specialized slate hammer.

Wood Shake & Shingle Roofs

Wood shakes and shingles provide a warm and elegant look (and even a rich aroma!) to the top of your home. More expensive than asphalt shingles, but less expensive than slate, wood shingles provide a look that many homeowners find irresistible. Their rich, warm color and texture blend beautifully in any natural environment. The natural effects of aging and weathering give shingles and shakes, in time, an attractive silvery grey color.

Cedar shakes and shingles contain a natural preservative making them uncommonly durable in their natural state. They can also be pressure treated for enhanced durability or fire retardance. Another primary benefit to shakes or shingles is their high degree of thermal insulation. Proper application of cedar shingles and shakes gives outstanding rigidity and resilience against extreme weather including high winds and pounding hail.

Wood Shingles

Wood shingles and shakes are typically made from cedar. Shingles are machine-sawn while shakes are hand-split and “rougher” looking.

Asphalt Shingles

CertainTeed Shingles

Jancewicz & Son is proud to install asphalt shingles from CertainTeed – the premier manufacturer of asphalt shingles in the United States. CertainTeed manufacturers the industry’s most extensive line of asphalt shingles. Pioneering the concept of multi-layered shingles, also known as architectural or designer shingles, the company has been an industry leader in color innovation with complex color blending technology and the introduction of bold designer shingle colors such as variegated reds, blues and greens. When your roof is on the line – only the best will do.

Asphalt shingles come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Asphalt shingles can be reinforced with either organic or fiberglass materials. Although organic reinforced shingles have been around longer, fiberglass reinforced shingles have come to dominate the market.

Single-ply or Membrane Roofing

Although single ply roofing is used primarily on commercial and industrial projects, it is becoming a popular roof covering on low slope porches and dormers. The hottest item in the single-ply market is ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM). Long term dependability, weatherability, and durability are among the primary factors contributing to the rapidly increasing demand for EPDM roofs.

Benefits of EPDM Roofing Systems:

Cyclical membrane fatigue resistance Proven hail resistance High resistance to ozone, weathering and abrasion Flexibility in low temperatures Superior resistance to extreme heat and fire Thermal shock durability Ultraviolet radiation resistance High wind resistance
